Lily and the Crab Painting Progress

Recently, I have gotten into very old story books such as Grimm’s Fairytales, The Blue Fairy Book and Aesop’s Fables. This story had come from the public domain book called The Blue Fairy, and the story is called The Waterlily and the Crab. The painting has been a long time to come into being. It is still being worked on.

This stage was made last year 2019, and it was from many other different drawings.

Here I began a border of lilies and water with sparkles.

Drawing phase with burnt umber.

The above is the drawing phase of the painting. I just use burnt umber, maybe a drop of linseed oil.

So in this phase, I lay down the colors, and give the picture a solid foundation. I focus on the elements, and the values, which are the light and dark nature of a painting to make it seem real. These are the mid-tone values, and there are little to no shadows represented at this time.

With the underpainting stages, I do not complete any one area, as I need to establish if all of the elements are harmonious and beautiful.

I have a large painting that I am going to make out of many smaller studies. The above is an underpainting study. Tomorrow, I will add the details and finish the painting off. Once the oil painting is complete it will be worth my time and whosoever owns it once sold.
